One More Week Down...How Many More to Go???

It's my weekend now. So I'm happy. I need this internship to end, like yesterday. I've faxed some resumes to some veterinary practices, did some housecleaning, and now I'm watching TV. Finally, Dr. Sofa picked up our dining room chairs to be reupholstered! I'm so excited. The other night I got very, very upset when I read up on Sputnik 2 and Laika, the first living being to ever be in space. The Russians were in such a rush to be the first to have a living being in space, they quickly trained a dog named Laika to go into space, knowingly doing so with no plan for her re-entry back to Earth (i.e. they knew she was going to die in space...basically when the air in her spacecraft ran out and when it overheated). What a horrible, inhumane death. I was so disturbed, and it was just a reminder of how I just wonder if the human race is destined to go to Hell. Not to mention all the other animals sent into space before humans were: chimps, rodents, and others...How can we do these things? Augh. Anyway, I watched the Oliver Stone film "The Doors" for the second time yesterday. I really love that flick, as I love most of Stone's films. Augh, I can't talk about the whole animals in space thing much more...it gets me so upset...

Hubba Hubba

Yesterday night Marcus and I went to a great restaurant that was recommended to me by the ophthalmologist at work, who's a self proclaimed "foodie", so I trust his opinion. We went to Dovetail on the upper west side. Good stuff! I was told to try the tasting menu, which I did. I even had truffles! Apparently it's the end of the season for truffles in Europe, so the restaurant had obtained one of the last batches. I'd recommend it. But honestly I'm a brunch freak, so I would have much rather tried their brunch than dinner if possible. But I'm not going to complain. Prior to making it into the city I watched Gus Van Sant's film "Elephant". It was a disturbing look at the lives of a few high school students somewhere in suburbia on the day of a school massacre, a la Columbine. Well what's the current obsession? I'm trying to work on getting out recently purchased Danish dining set reupholstered with some up to date fabric. We're potentially going with Dr. Sofa. So did you figure out what that illustration is all about? Well, they are dovetail joints in pieces of wood that fit together...and the name of the restaurant we went to last night was Dovetail...get it???

A Day of Tears...

I'm very emotional by nature...I can be sad, happy, and very angry all within minutes of each other. Needless to say I cry when I see movies and I get very emotional when I see those ads or shows about animal abuse and stories about police dogs who die in the line of fire. I cry after I have to euthanize my patients or when I see their owners cry. Well today I went on a crying TV rampage. First I watched a one hour fund raising program about St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. There were stories of little kids with cancer, some of which died despite treatment. Then I was watching Oprah and they showed a clip from youtube.com about two men who raised a lion cub, released him in Africa, then reunited with him a year later (true story). Well, I did have a couple of hours of laughter---I watched "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", a Woody Allen film, and I must say it was entertaining. Well, let's hope that I have no more tears to shed today while watching TV!!!

Helvetica!

I just watched the documentary "Helvetica", which provides the back story of the ever popular font Helvetica. It was interesting, and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in design or calligraphy. Other than that, I made myself chocolate chip pancakes and chilled out. I also got a pretty good bitching session in with my good friend and fellow intern mate Gina. Augh. Agita, I tell you, the internship gives me agita...

Overnights Over for Now!

Phew. The overnights are done for now...so what did I do after my last shift? I stayed up the rest of day. Marcus and I met up with Terry-a, Steve, and Seren and had brunch. Then Marcus and I went to the wonderland we call The ABC Carpet Warehouse in the Bronx (discounted compared to their store in Union Square)! We bought an Edwardian style leather chair for our desk...Marcus fell in love with it. We were really looking for a dining room table, but no luck just yet. We're on the prowl for a Danish style set. Today I decided to indulge in the On Demand functions of our cable TV. I just watched "Zack and Miri Make a Porno"...it was pretty amusing. It's about long time friends who fall into hard financial times, decide to make a porno together, and end up admitting that they've really had feelings for each other all this time. I'd recommend it for a laugh. Well I better go do sit ups...

Brunch, Weathermen, and Sleep

I slept 12 hours last night. Which is, by my standards, quite excessive. But the day before I was up for literally 24 hours straight. Between getting off my overnight shift, meeting up with a friend for brunch at my favorite local spot, and then having my family over for a while, I kept truckin'. Then Marcus came back from a trip to North Carolina. So the Tri state area was warned about getting 8-10 inches of snow....yet when I woke up today at noon, I saw about an inch on the ground. Not that I'm complaining, but it's always amazing when weathermen repeatedly warn for the worst, then nothing happens...oh, I just saw the weather and maybe it's just my neighborhood that wasn't hit, because apparently other parts have had a lot of snow...oh well. We just ordered one of those Aerobed mattresses so when guests come, there's a place to sleep. We've been borrowing Terry-a's for way too long at this point...we need our own. So what's happening now? Well I'm waiting for Oprah, of course! Oh, not to be a film production snob, but I've been watching a lot of the Travel Channel lately. And now they have developed the Travel Channel Academy...a school that will teach you how to be a travel "filmmaker". Sorry, not convinced. Filmmaking is a lot more than taking your parents' videocamera and shooting the mountains.
